Homework

At St. Joseph's, homework is a vital component of our curriculum and helps students take responsibility for their learning and become more independent and resilient learners as they advance through their education.
When students first join us, we provide the necessary support to help them adjust to managing their homework in a way that fosters their independence. In core subjects in Y7, students engage with Sparx Learning to secure their key skills in English, maths and science and are given revision tasks and wider project work in other subjects to build their confidence in time for assessments.
As students move from Y8 to Y11, they continue to engage with Sparx Learning (which is scaffolded to their needs for stretch and support) and are also set homework based on the proportional amount of teaching time they receive –core subjects setting the highest volume.
As students move through their academic journey, our expectations evolve. In Key Stage 3, students are generally assigned homework tasks that should take about 30 minutes to complete. By Key Stage 4, this typically increases to 45 minutes, and in Key Stage 5, homework may take up to an hour.
In Years 7-11, students are expected to record their homework in their school planners. This not only helps them stay organised but also allows families to track the tasks that have been set.
We expect all homework to be completed on time, and any instances of non-completion will be followed up accordingly.
Study Support
Students who struggle with completing homework are always supported. Subject teachers and pastoral tutors are the first point of contact for a student who is struggling. If a student has more persistent difficulties, then our Heads of House and wider pastoral staff are on hand to support and guide them
Students can attend our Homework Club based in the Library on the days and times below. This time is fully staffed and students have access to our vast book collection and a number of PCs and tablets. Additionally, we also run Study Support for targeted students who need further guidance and encouragement.
