Art and Photography

‘Arts subjects encourage self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as a sense of individual identity. Arts education also imparts valuable skills that will serve students in their lives and careers: observation, problem-solving, innovation, and critical thinking.’

The Tate Art Gallery

In the Art Department, we aim to provide an art curriculum which is comprehensive and well-rounded. Our curriculum is designed to develop critical thinking, providing opportunities for students to express their creativity, and develop problem-solving skills through various artistic mediums. Students will learn various artistic processes and techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture and photography to develop their artistic voice.

We want to build our learners confidence and self-expression. Our curriculum provides opportunities for students to express themselves authentically, building confidence in their artistic abilities and encouraging self-expression, including those with special educational needs (SEND). The curriculum is modified to ensure accessibility and enjoyably for all pupils.

Our curriculum has been sequenced to ensure that all learners will make progress, revisiting key concepts in colour theory and the visual elements of art to ensure that all learners make progress. Having taught at St. Joseph’s for over 20 years, I have developed a proven sequence of learning where every student can make progress and create work of which they are proud.

Curriculum Intentions

  • Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.
  • Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes.
  • Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses.
  • Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language.
