Law, Politics and Criminology

Students achieve highly in, and have enjoyment of, Law, Politics and Criminology, by supporting all staff and students within the department, in lessons and out.

The Law, Politics and Criminology curriculum allows students to develop their understanding of the wider world and the issues that impact them on a day-to-day basis. The A Level for Law and Politics and the Level 3 for Criminology is at the core of that, but the department also ensures that awareness of legal rules and political issues occurs lower down the school too through assemblies, PSHE and the Big Legal Lesson/UK Parliament Week.

By engaging students early in these issues, they will develop an interest in further study in the subject and also be ready for the world around them when they leave school. The A Levels and Level 3 give foundational knowledge of the subjects and success in those examinations stems from having a critical view of the core knowledge and how it links to students’ lives. Both Law and Politics are broadening their access to include students from all backgrounds and this is the case both locally and nationally. With links to Clifford Chance and local universities, the department supports students in this too.

Curriculum Intention:

1. Knowledge and understanding of legal issues, political ideas and criminological theories.
2. Analysis and evaluation of the same.
3. Application of legal rules to a given scenario.
4. Allow students of all ages to access the subjects through activities across the year and also through visits and trips to local contacts such as Clifford Chance and universities.
5. Develop all students knowledge of the impact and importance of law and politics on their daily lives.
